Pizza in Naples ruined me for pizza everywhere else

I thought I knew pizza. Grew up on it. Delivery boxes, pepperoni, extra cheese. The whole deal.

Then I went to Naples.

A friend dragged me to this tiny place. No tables. Just a counter and a wood-fire oven. People were eating standing up, folding their slices like tacos.

I ordered a margherita. It showed up in about two minutes. The crust was thin, soft, a little charred on the edges. The sauce was bright. The mozzarella was creamy and melted into pools.

It wasn’t like any pizza I’d ever had. It was better. So much better.

That’s how I learned what pizza is actually supposed to taste like.

What is Pizza Napoletana?

Neapolitan pizza is the one from Naples. Thin crust, soft center, puffy edges with little charred spots. It’s not crispy like Roman pizza. It’s foldable.

The classic is Margherita — tomato, mozzarella, basil. That’s it. No pepperoni. No extra cheese. No pineapple (please).

I’ve tried both. Margherita is the one I keep going back to.

Where to get it in Naples

I haven’t tried every pizzeria in Naples. But here’s where I went and what I learned.

L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele

This is the famous one from “Eat, Pray, Love.” Long line. Only two kinds of pizza — Margherita and Marinara. No toppings, no customizations. You get what they make.

Worth the wait? Yes. But go early.

Sorbillo

Another famous spot. More options, still excellent. The line is also long. I went here after Michele for comparison. Both are great. Sorbillo has more choices if you want something different.

Random place with no line

The best pizza I had wasn’t at either of these. It was at a random spot near my hotel. No tourists. Just locals. I pointed at something on the menu and hoped for the best.

Don’t stress about finding the “perfect” place. Good pizza is everywhere in Naples.

How to eat it

Fold it. That’s the Neapolitan way. They call it “libretto” — like folding a piece of paper. It keeps the toppings from sliding off.

A knife and fork is fine too. No one’s judging. But try the fold at least once.

Final Thoughts

Look, it’s bread, tomato, cheese. Not complicated.

But when it’s made right — soft crust, bright sauce, creamy mozzarella — it’s one of the best things you can eat.

I used to think delivery pizza was pizza. Now I know the difference.

If you ever go to Naples, skip the fancy restaurants. Find a small pizzeria. Order a Margherita. Eat it standing up if you have to.

You won’t regret it.
